Villa du Repos (incorporated July 16, 1973)

The Villa du Repos Inc. building was constructed in 1955 as the Notre-Dame du perpétuel secours seminary. In 1969, the Redemptorist Seminary closed its doors, and the building remained unused until 1972, when it became Villa Elmwood Inc., a private nursing home for the elderly.

It was at this time that the Board of Directors of Villa Providence Shediac Inc. expressed their interest in the project and considered purchasing the building to turn it into a nursing home for the elderly. Following the bankruptcy of Villa Elmwood Inc., Villa Providence Shediac Inc., the project sponsor, obtained an option to purchase the building and land in question, located at 474 Elmwood Drive, Moncton.

This is how Villa du Repos Inc. was created and incorporated on July 16, 1973. This non-profit corporation had 14 members. It’s purpose was to provide housing, food and care for 150 elderly and disabled people in the Moncton area.

On June 28, 1973, the Honorable Lawrence Garvie, Minister of Health, granted the operating permit for a 150-bed home for the aged. The corporation also obtained a loan and subsidy from the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation.

In August 1973, the building was purchased by Villa du Repos Inc. The building in question is a 4-storey brick structure in very good condition, situated on 32 acres of land. The corporation immediately undertook a number of major repairs, including the installation of a nurse call system, a fire alarm system and an emergency exit on the north side of the building.

The new corporation had to organize and make viable a 150-bed home for the elderly and disabled, providing three levels of care including special supervision, nursing care and personal care. This task was a success, thanks to the expertise of the members of the Board of Directors of Villa Providence Shediac Inc. on whom the new corporation could count, and who had already gone through the same experience. Mr. Pierre Gignac was hired as Assistant Administrator.

In 2004, work began on the construction of a new 126-bed, single-storey home. The new home will be located at 125 Murphy Avenue in Moncton. The home officially opened on July 6, 2006.

In 2016, an addition of 60 beds is added, making the home a 186-bed facility. The 60-bed addition opens in July 2017.
